High speed pavement scanning
The Synergy Road Scanning System can quickly scan pavements and generate a model of the existing surface, allowing the creation of a design to meet smoothness expectations. Application of this design data through the PavesSmart system ensures material management stays within acceptable yields, reduces the number of lifts required to reach finished design and maximizes productivity.

Our team are specialists in complex design situations with difficult parameters. Over the years we’ve worked on numerous design projects where existing structures need to tie in with new construction. Projects range from parking lots with multiple drains and complex shapes, airport taxiways with multiple light posts, to numerous sites where a new surface needs to tie into existing pavement with seamless cross fall and camber.
Our proven technology and experienced PaveSmart technicians combine to bring you a full in-house design service utilizing our survey profilograph system, high speed road scanning system or our traditional optical robotic or GPS survey systems to collect applicable survey data. Our CAD packages and resurfacing modules are used to redesign the entire shape of the road, accessway or concrete bridge deck to full geometric survey criteria.
Resurfacing and restoration
We can establish all the parameters of the restoration work required: milling map, volume of asphalt needed, NAASRA/IRI targets, crossfall data and other requirements ahead of the remedial work taking place. This then allows for accurate surface cutting or asphalt laying to proceed based entirely on the data mapped.
Variable depth milling
If your company is involved in variable depth milling and you are in need of survey accuracy but not complexity, PaveSmart will be of interest to you. With the ability to control ‘thickness to be cut’ on both sides of the machine to survey grade accuracy, the PaveSmart grade control provides an affordable way of meeting contract level tolerances and smoothness requirements.
Synergy’s PaveSmart grade control system offers distinct advantages to the engineer and/or contractor on any project requiring variable depth milling. The unit adapts to any planer that has electric/hydraulic control, eliminates string line or complicated 3D setups, allows high accuracy milling to + 1/8 inch or 3mm, increases productivity, and is far less costly and risky to use in comparison to a conventional string-line or GPS control.
Simple set out
To illustrate, we can load a 10,000 foot/3,000 meter runway project into the PaveSmart system before two people can set up string line for milling a mere 200 foot/60 meter distance and/or establish a complicated 3D control system.
Experienced survey team
Survey cut depths are input to the system directly from either your job’s geometric design files via cut sheets collected by Synergy’s experienced ground survey team or from designs via the Synergy Road Scanning System or Synergy’s Pavement Design service.
Precise variable depth milling and paving survey
Together with Synergy’s patented PaveSmart grade control system, our teams are specialists in collecting accurate ground survey data used to create precise variable depth asphalt paving and milling levels.
Accurate material control
We do this by accurately surveying the initial surface to determine a grid and plotting out precise milling cuts or paving depths for each consecutive run that the milling machine or asphalt paver needs to make. So we’re automatically formulating a very precise picture of how much material will be required and an absolute picture of the required finished levels needed.
Synergy also specializes in all manner of engineering survey related tasks, including set-out for structures, roads and bridges, as constructed plans and drawings, line marking and reinstatement survey.

Inertial survey profile system
The Synergy Survey-Profile system is both a DOT/NATA certified inertial profiler and high resolution mobile surveying system. The Survey-Profile system can simultaneously measure IRI (longitudinal profile), transverse profile and 2D/3D surface scans for land surveying and machine control applications. The survey side of the system has been end-user validated as more accurate than any commercial scanning system.
Optimized for smoothness
The resulting outputs feature open area or roadbed topographies with accurate cross-slopes and elevations approaching total stations accuracy (with control point merger). Use the data for road design (optimized for smoothness) and variable depth machine control.
2D and 3D scanning
This device does full 3D scanning and can be simultaneously (or separately) used for IRI testing and full lane transverse profiles (for rutting, lane edge change and more under AASHTO PP69-10 & 70-10). The surface survey data can be adjusted with a merge in of control points for very accurate 3D elevation content.
IRI with cross slope and cut fill
The system can also be used for 2D scanning for pavement rehabilitation work that does not involve paving to grade. Synergy’s software includes a Profile Design module for configuring slope and cut/fill parameters for a design output optimized for best IRI results. The data can be exported to machine control systems, including Synergy’s PaveSmart grade control system.
